Sunday 15th January 2017

Redcar Tarn,
The Tarn has turned up many surprises in the past and it was pleasing to receive a message from Ian Hargreaves about a Black-headed Gull, wearing a coloured band, which visited there on 11th January 2017.  The information regarding the band shows that it was ringed in Norway.  In 2015, another of the same species with a ringed band, was seen on the tarn and returned to summer in Norway.  It then made a second appearance on the tarn during the winter of 2016.

A skein of 75 Pink-footed Geese flew west down the Aire Valley at 9am.  The flock of Geese at the bottom of the Glen amounted to 190 Canadas, 60 Greylag and a solitary Pink-footed.  A resident was pointing out the damaged to the riverside area in Robert's Park caused by this flock when they make their regular visits.  Urgent action is required to rid the park of this menace.  At Hirstwood weir a Dipper was feeding and in Shipley Glen eight Grey Heron were present.
